State-Building and Enlightenment
In the 18th century, the philosophies of the Enlightenment lead to a new perception of rulership: enlightened absolutism. Such monarchs as Frederick II no longer see themselves as appointed by God, but as "the first servants of the state". They introduce reforms, so as to fill the state coffers for war. Centralisation and nation-building go hand in hand.
The main film presents an overview of the concepts of the Enlightenment and their state implementation in Prussia and Austria. It also shows that war is an essential political tool. Every state wants to play its part in the European concert of powers – the approval of their subjects is not required.
The modules deal with the life and reign of Frederick II and Maria Theresa. They also offer insight into the courtly culture of the age and, using the example of a baroque festival, portray the life of the nobility in the 1750s. In addition, we introduce Leopold III, Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau and his Wörlitzer Park - a landscaped garden in the spirit of the Enlightenment.
Exciting and instructively told, with expert scientific interviews, this DVD is perfectly suited for history classes and all those interested in history.
